Navigating the competitive and challenging world of cybersecurity job hunting, we at CISO Marketplace have faced our own set of trials. Since June 2023, our journey has been a testament to the complexities of the cybersecurity job market. After concluding a six-month red team contract with a Fortune 300 company, disrupted by unsatisfactory experiences with a consulting and recruiting firm, we embarked on a rigorous job application spree.

In the span of six months, we utilized platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Dice, applying to over 750 positions. Our experience was marked by a multitude of automatic denials, with only <10 opportunities leading to interviews with actual humans. We recently advanced to later stages with a couple companies, but the journey has been anything but smooth.

One particular setback occurred with another recruiting firm. While progressing to the fourth interview stage, our plans were derailed during a trip to DEFCON 2023. A last-minute revelation from the recruiting firm about an internal hire, after an eight-month search, left us in a lurch. This episode highlighted the precarious nature of job hunting and the challenges in securing consulting contracts, similar to what we achieved with our previous company, Vulsec.

Amidst this turmoil, we observed a trend – hundreds of applicants vying for the same positions, often met with automated rejection letters. This reality, coupled with the difficulty in establishing human connections through traditional channels, illuminated the need for innovative solutions.

In response to these challenges, we’ve decided to leverage our experiences to aid the community.

The Lazarus Group, a North Korean hacking collective, has been targeting companies using sophisticated cyberattacks. Notably, they breached an aerospace firm in Spain using a new malware called ‘LightlessCan’. This was part of their “Operation Dreamjob” campaign, where they approached targets on LinkedIn with fake job offers.
